Newmarket Allotment Association
Bonfire Code of Practice
99% of green waste can be composted.
Bonfires are only permitted between 1st October - 30th April on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Therefore, NO bonfires in late Spring and Summer.
On the Field Terrace Road site, plot holders can have small fires to burn individual waste. Plot holders must use a ventilated incinerator bin or suitable metal drum on your plot, preferably with a "funnel" lid, to keep the fire contained and manageable.
All tenants should be aware of the punitive fines which can be imposed by a Magistrates Court for persistent smoke nuisance.
PLEASE NOTE: That this is the tenant’s responsibility and not the Association’s.
Avoid damp still days when smoke hangs.
Check the wind direction is away from neighbouring homes and schools.
Burn dry materials only.
Avoid black smoke; NO oil, plastic, rubber or treated wood is to be burned.
Always keep a bucket of water handy.
DO NOT leave the fire unattended.
Extinguish the fire at least one hour before sunset.
The Association's Public Liability Policy requires fires to be in a cleared area of at least 10 metres from property; they must not be left unattended; they must be extinguished at least one hour prior to leaving the site; and a suitable extinguishing device must be available for immediate use.
The Committee has the right in the event of adverse weather conditions (e.g. drought conditions, continuous high winds) to suspend the right to have fires or naked flames on site.
